O’Byrnes were distinguished in the service of France. John and Thomas Beirne were
born in Co. Longford into a very wealthy farming family. Their father sent
them to St Omer in France to study to become priests. John Beirne became a
parish priest while Thomas became a parson. They both ministered for a while
in the same parish in County Meath. Thomas went to England and was appointed
Chaplain of the Fleet under Lord Howe. He also wrote for the theatre and
became part of the high society. Thomas acted as Chaplain and Private
Secretary to a Viceroy of Ireland - the Duke of Portland. Thomas Beirne
returned to Ireland and became Bishop of Meath. During his service in Meath,
Thomas built 57 churches and 72 glebe houses. He died at Lee House,
Ardbraccan in 1823. Thomas had always wished to unite the churches of England
and Ireland. Henry O'Beirne, born in
1851,was an Irish emigrant who became a popular writer in America where he
wrote about the Texas Indians. Eugene Francis O'Beirne also
had ideas about the clergy. He wrote an accurate account of " the system
of discipline at Maynooth College " which contained an account of the system
of tyranny there. This account was published in Dublin in 1835. |
